Kids, Run Your First Marathon!ING Run for Something Better

Be the youngest to complete a marathon in South Florida and run in what will be the biggest kids-only race in the world! Students in Miami-Dade have a chance to do something most people will never do- FINISH A MARATHON. The ING Run for Something Better is a free program that challenges children to complete 26.2 miles. Student athletes will get to run the “Final Mile” on the same course as 15,000 people during the ING Miami Marathon® on January 25, 2009. Have fun running in school and even more fun running out of school with parents and friends! Running will show you the benefits of physical activity and will help you train for middle school and high school sports. Just 15-30 minutes/day of physical activity and you'll feel better and live a healthier, happier life.

How Do Kids Run 26.2 Miles?

The ING Run for Something Better program will take place during your daily Physical Education classes at school! You will run 1-2 miles per week, for 15 weeks. After running the 25th mile in, you will be invited to run 1.2 exciting miles on Sunday, January 25, 2009 during the “Final Mile” at the ING Miami Marathon®.

Why should kids exercise?

Everyone should participate in at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity (breaking a sweat, shortness of breath) 5 days a week to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Exercise and daily physical activity make you healthier and help you live longer. Regular physical activity reduces the risk for heart attack, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke and other health problems you may suffer as you grow up. Exercise also helps reduce the symptoms of depression and anxiety caused by stress. And if your health isn’t a good enough reason to exercise, research has shown that more exercise can lead to better grades in school.

Prizes For Every Final Mile Finisher!

Each student athlete who participates and completes all 26.2 miles will receive a Finisher’s Medal, T-Shirt, race bib number, food, drinks, and other goodies.

A Note to PE Teachers and Parents...
The ING Run for Something Better is a privately funded program created by ING, the FIT Miami Foundation and PR Racing Inc. in order to promote healthier lifestyles through physical activity. By participating in this program, children are motivated to exercise while completing a goal oriented program. Studies have shown a positive correlation between grades and physical activity, as well as a link between physical fitness and mental well being. With your help, this program can help get Miami-Dade’s children on a path to a healthier future. Ask your child if they are interested in running for something better.
